Stages of fibre optic cable production at the “Uteks” plant

Fibre-optic cables (FOCs) are the backbone of modern telecommunications networks, providing high-speed data transmission over long distances. Chernihiv-based Uteks Ukraine Cable Plant is one of the leading producers of fibre-optic cables in Ukraine, with a 25% share of the national market.

In this article, we will take a closer look at the fibre optic cable production process at Uteks, focusing on the production stages and the use of modern technologies and equipment.

Stages of fibre optic cable production at “Uteks Ukraine”

Let’s take a look at how the production of fibre-optic cables begins and how the manufacturing process takes place at our enterprise.

1. Preparation of optical fibres

The production of fibre optics begins with the preparation of optical fibres, which are supplied in special reels exclusively from world leaders. At this stage, the fibres undergo a colouring process to facilitate identification during subsequent installation and maintenance. The dyeing is carried out in accordance with standards, ensuring bright and durable colours. 12 standard colours are used for identification.

2. Application of secondary coatings

After colouring, the optical fibres are covered with a protective sheath to ensure their mechanical stability and protection from external influences. This process involves the application of a polymeric material by extrusion, forming a protective tube around the fibre. Depending on the future application, power or moisture protection elements may be added at this stage.

For suspension cables, an important parameter is the excess length of the fibre. It is moulded to prevent the so-called “pulling in” of the fibre in the cable, so Utechs strictly adheres to production standards to ensure that the natural tension of the cable during operation is compensated for.

3. Forming of cable core (twisting)

At this stage, the optical fibres in the secondary coating are combined into a single cable core. The elements are laid in a specific configuration, and strength elements (aramid yarns, glass rods, etc.) are added to increase strength. For additional protection against moisture, a special industrial gel or water-blocking tapes are used.

The core forming process is controlled to ensure uniformity and compliance with technical requirements.

4. Overlaying the outer shell

The outer sheath protects the cable from mechanical damage, moisture and other external factors. It is made of durable polyethylene or other materials, depending on the purpose of the cable. Armour layers or other protective elements can be added to increase resistance to external influences.

Testing and quality control

After each of these stages, strict quality control is carried out in terms of a range of parameters, including tests for mechanical strength, optical characteristics, resistance to external influences and geometric parameters. This ensures that the products meet high standards and customer requirements.
